Top 3 Organizing Mistakes Busy Moms Make
(And How to Fix Them)
March 15, 2025
As a busy mom, you juggle a million responsibilities every day. Between work, school drop-offs, cooking meals, and endless to-do lists, keeping your home organized can feel like an impossible task. But what if I told you that a few simple tweaks could make a world of difference? Today, I’m breaking down the top three organizing mistakes busy moms make—and more importantly, how to fix them!
Mistake #1: Trying to Organize Without Decluttering
One of the biggest mistakes I see is moms attempting to organize without decluttering first. It’s tempting to buy bins and baskets to "contain the chaos," but if you're just storing items you don’t actually need, you're only moving clutter around instead of solving the problem.

The Fix:
Before you even think about organizing, declutter first! Go through your space with a critical eye and ask yourself:
Do I use this regularly?
Do I love this item?
Would I buy this again today?
If the answer is no, it’s time to donate, toss, or repurpose. Once you've pared things down, organizing becomes so much easier (and way more effective!).
Mistake #2: Not Creating Systems That Work for Your Lifestyle
A Pinterest-perfect pantry or color-coded closet might look beautiful, but if the system doesn’t fit your real daily routine, it won’t last. Many moms set up organizing systems that are too complicated or don’t consider their family’s habits—leading to frustration when things quickly return to chaos.

The Fix:
Keep it simple and sustainable! Ask yourself:
How does my family naturally use this space without requiring too much effort?
Can my kids easily follow this system?
Will this setup make my life easier?
For example, instead of stacking folded clothes in deep drawers where they tend to topple over and unravel your hard work, try file-folding so kids can see and grab what they need without making a mess. Or, use labeled bins in the pantry, so everyone knows exactly where snacks, lunch items, and breakfast staples go. Adding photos labels for little ones who can't read just yet The easier the system, the more likely it will stick!
Mistake #3: Thinking You Have to Do It All Yourself
Moms are superheroes, but that doesn’t mean you have to do everything alone. Many moms struggle with keeping their homes organized simply because they don’t involve their
family in the process.

The Fix:
Make organizing a team effort! Even young kids can help with simple tasks like:
Putting toys in labeled bins
Sorting laundry by color
Clearing the table after meals
For older kids, assign small responsibilities, like packing their school bags the night before or keeping their shoes in a designated spot. When everyone pitches in, maintaining an organized home becomes much easier—and it teaches kids valuable life skills along the way.
The key to an organized home isn’t perfection—it’s having systems that work for you! By decluttering first, setting up simple and practical systems, and getting your family involved, you’ll create a space that’s easier to maintain and less stressful to manage.
