1. Begin with a Systematic Approach: From the start, create an organized method for storing your child’s belongings. This will make it easier to sort through items and avoid feeling overwhelmed later.

2. Identify What’s Truly Sentimental: As your child grows, they’ll create artwork, collect toys, and outgrow clothes. Focus on the items that carry deep sentimental value—those that spark important memories or reflect milestones in your child’s life.

So long as the bin fits easily in its designated spot and a 1 bin/child boundary is maintained, this system works well. When the box gets full and more items make their way over, this is when decision-making skills comes in; some items will have to be let go of in order to make room for the newly-important items.

5. Seek Permission Before Passing Things Down: Always ask your children if they’d like to receive any of your possessions before giving them away. Avoid overwhelming them with items they may not want and only offer things you think they’d genuinely value.

6. Reflect on the Purpose of Giving: Ask yourself why you’re passing an item down. Is it truly for their benefit, or are you attached to it? Be mindful that, by giving it to them, you’re assigning significance that they might not share, which could leave them feeling burdened.
