6 Simple Steps to Transition Your Closet for

Fall and Winter

December 8, 2024

As the days grow cooler and the leaves start to turn, it’s time to swap out summer attire for cozy fall and winter pieces. Transitioning your closet for the season doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few smart steps, you can streamline your wardrobe, make space for seasonal essentials, and ensure that everything you need is right at your fingertips. Here’s a quick guide to help you refresh, reorganize, and get your closet ready for the colder months ahead.

  1. To transition my closet from summer to fall, first I pull out from storage my winter clothes from past years BEFORE making any purchases from all the inspiration I draw up on Instagram. While I personally don't follow any fashion bloggers, I find cute sweaters, dresses and boots I like as I scroll through the content I do follow, and get inspired to shop. Remembering the clothes I already have prevents me from making purchases of items I already own or have something very similar.

  2. I follow the one-in, one-out rule. I never buy more hangers (I'm a sucker for slim velvet hangers). I also have a weakness for cute fall sweaters- so if I find a sweater I really want to buy, great, but I need to be prepared to let go of something that hasn’t been worn in a hot minute.

  3. Once I pull my winter clothes out, I designate a bag for donations and make a pile of winter clothing I want to keep on my bed.

  4. I then go to my closet and do a ruthless run-through. Anything that I only wear during the warmer months gets taken off the hanger and folded to be placed in the seasonal bin (These Under Bed ones from Target are a hit!) Anything that I haven’t worn at all in the last year gets placed in the donation bag.

  5. Pack up any summer hats, dresses, shorts, sandals, and beach wear and gear that you don’t anticipate wearing with the cooler seasons approaching. Go through every item and remove that which you don’t use (hello donation pile!) and pack up the items you know you won’t use until next April.

  6. With your now empty hangers, hang the winter items. Sorting them by color and sleeve lengths are just some ways to give your closet a more neat, polished look.

With these six steps, transitioning your closet for fall and winter can be both simple and satisfying. By organizing your wardrobe, you’ll have easy access to all your cozy favorites, making it a breeze to get ready on chilly mornings.
